Cash seized at Mardol; unofficial reports put figure at Rs 16 lakh

PONDA: The Election Commission flying squad on Tuesday seized several bundles of cash at Mardol junction on Ponda-Mardol bypass.

PONDA: The Election Commission flying squad on Tuesday seized several bundles of cash at Mardol junction on Ponda-Mardol bypass.
The officials were found counting money just at the junction and passersby raised eyebrows over the huge bundles of cash on tables at the pandal erected for surveillance.
The flying squad members that seized the cash include Returning officer Sudhi Kerkar, DySP Sunita Sawant and PI Sudesh Naik. The entire squad was present when the cash was counted and a large number of police personnel guarded the pandal during the counting. 
Some people had taken photos of the cash and uploaded them on WhatsApp and social media and it went viral. However, the media persons were not allowed to take photos of the cash bundles and the counting process on ground that the Election Commission does not permit the same. The media was informed that Inspector General of Police and Election Commission officials would brief the media about the incident at Panjim.
Meanwhile, though no official figures were available, till evening, as to how much cash was seized, rumours are that the cash seized was Rs 16 lakh.
