PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji’s ordinary meeting was cancelled at the last moment by Mayor Yatin Parekh even as corporators and Commissioner himself were clueless over the cancellation.

“I have no idea why the meeting was canceled. No reason has been given by Mayor,” CCP commissioner Agnelo Fernandes told reporters.

The notice for the meeting was served on December 24 to all councillors, who are now in agitating mood over Mayor’s decision. Commissioner was gheraoed by opposition corporators seeking an explanation for the sudden cancellation of the meeting.

“I myself am clueless about the cancellation of the meeting,” Fernandes responded to the queries raised by corporators.

The councillors were informed that Mayor is out of station.

“We got the message when we reached the office,” corporator Vaidehi Naik said adding “when we tried to contact Mayor, he did not respond”.

The very first meeting of 2012 had several major points on the agenda including revision of rent of municipal shops at St Inez municipal building and Praca da Comercio building. The corporation has hiked the rent by almost five times of the existing rent.

The shops which are currently charged Rs 30 per sq meters, would be charged Rs 150 per sq meters under the proposed hike. The transfer fees are also to be hiked from Rs 5000 to Rs 25,000.

“We want a suitable answer from the Mayor over the decision as it is not acceptable,” Naik said.

The meeting was also supposed to decide over constitution of ‘Municipal Road Safety and Traffic Management Committee’ consisting of senior citizens, women and students.

CCP’s last meeting was held in November, 2011.
