PANJIM: After all the confusion and the chaos on Friday, the CCP got back to serious business with the corporation administration trying to bring the garbage collection under control. bulldozers were pressed into service to clear the way for the garbage trucks to collect and dump the garbage at land fill sites.
However, the way forward for the workers as well as the ambitious plans initially proposed by the Corporation and planning and execution started by the administration seems to be unclear given that the Mayor Surendra Furtado himself has backed off from the plans to professionalize and systematize the garbage collection.
At the Friday press conference, the mayor had made allegations against the Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues, and CCP calling them incompetent and refusing to acknowledge the work that was done by them since the workers went on a sudden strike holding the city’s garbage collection to ransom.
The temporary workers were hired as per council resolution until suddenly the mayor decided to go against his own resolution.
The temporary workers were hired and the old workers too began work without any orders of the CCP administration. The legality of the action notwithstanding, the issue now comes up of the payment, especially given that termination notices had been issued to some 330 workers and some tender issued on the express directions of the corporation and mayor.
The Commissioner told the media that he had not received any written communication either from the government or the corporation and he was not present at the meeting.
He however, acknowledged that the whole issue had turned into a nightmare.
The opposition led by former mayor Vaidahi Naik told media that they were not aware of how the workers would get paid and alleged that the mayor was trying to mislead the workers as well as the residents.
The mayor on the other hand was very confident in his political and survival skills reiterating that he had saved the day and what he had done, was for the people.
