PANJIM: The Market Committee Chairman of the City of the Corporation of Panaji (CCP), Pramay Mainkar has levelled various allegations against the Panjim Market Tenants Association as well those councillors who were looking after the municipal markets in the past.

While addressing media persons on Tuesday, Mainkar said he has changed the system.
He alleged that the income of those from CCP, who were in charge of the Panjim markets, from the market may have stopped once he took over as he has been very strict in how the market functions.
He gave the example of presently the sopo collections from vendors is approximately Rs 14,000 to 15,000 a day and that the amount was earlier around Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 before he took over. He also said CCP has tendered the sopo collection process. He added that they will soon be completing the tendering process for the sopo collection of the Caranzalem fish market.
Mainkar also questioned the motive of those who are not signing the new leave and licence agreement for the 456 shops of the municipal market. While only 20 tenants have come forward to sign the new agreements, there has been reluctance on the part of the remaining.
Mainkar attributed this to the fact that members of the Market Tenants Association have been allegedly renting out these shops for Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000.
He further alleged that some of these persons have been on the executive committee for 20 to 25 years.
Reportedly, CCP has introduced the new leave and licence agreements as the corporation has not been receiving any revenue from the market.
On another topic – the Panjim Church fair, Mainkar said that CCP won’t be charging traditional vendors but that the other vendors will be charged a reduced fee of Rs 60 per square metre in view of the pandemic.
