PANJIM: The Mayor of Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) Rohit Monserrate on Friday apologised for the poor condition of Panjim roads. He also said that the ongoing works are necessary and once completed, there won’t be any need for digging up the roads for next 15 to 20 years.
Herald had reported how the city dwellers and visitors to Smart City Panjim were facing a harrowing time traversing around the city due to the mass digging of the streets and road closures. Road opposite Delmon Hotel, near Fidalgo, the narrow lanes of old Panjim areas like St Tome, Fontainhas have been dug for the replacement of sewer lines and reconstruction of drains and other basic infrastructure.
The work has been taken up at such a time of the year when the Panjim city is overburdened by tourists and visitors for IFFI and other big ticket events.
The Mayor of CCP Monserrate said, “I apologise for the inconvenience that is being faced by the people. However, lot of the work that is being done is absolutely necessary. Lot of pavements, utility drains drainage system that has not been done for 30 to 40 years.”
“All the works have been taken together. The road work under taken by GSUDA will have all the utilities laid which will include sewage, water, power, sewage gas etc. The roads will not have to be dug for next 10 to 15 years,” he added.
Monseratte said that after having several meetings with the Traffic Cell of Panjim the police haven’t been doing their job to their best. “We will take up the concerns with the Traffic Cell,” he said.
The Mayor also said Panjim city needs a master plan. It may be recalled that Herald had highlighted the state of the roads in Panjim and the inconvenience that is being caused to the city dwellers and visitors. As informed by the Mayor the work is mostly ending in June-July.
