PANJIM: Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) in an urge to shed its image of a toothless tiger will be urging the government to amend the City of Panaji Corporation Act, 2002 and provide more powers to the urban local body.
CCP Mayor Uday Madkaikar informed that the CCP during a special meeting of the council on Friday will be taking up a resolution to demand amendment to the City of Panaji Corporation Act, 2002.
“The CCP has no powers to penalise those doing illegalities. Neither have we the powers to demolish illegal structures nor to seal municipal properties and termination of trade licences. We need these powers and many more if the Corporation has to function”, he stated.
He said that the CCP will propose to the government to amend the Act. He further stated that the other agendas for the meeting include decisions on the long pending issue of the lease agreement for the Panjim municipal market tenants and fixing the rentals for the shops at the Praca-de-Commercio, shops located at the CCP building and the petrol pumps.
In addition to the above, the council will also discuss on the agenda of setting up a bio-digester plant under CSR funds. Sources in the CCP informed that PWD has granted in-principle approval for setting up the bio-digester on a plot of 1500 sq mts of land adjacent to the sewage treatment plant in Tonca.
The bio-digester with a capacity of treating 10 tonnes per day will be set up with an approximate cost of Rs 2.5 crore. Due to crunch of funds, the CCP is seeking to set up the plant under CSR funds.
