PANJIM: In a notification issued by the Directorate of Municipal Administration, the post of chairperson in four municipal councils namely Mapusa, Quepem, Sanguem and Valpoi has been reserved for women.
The order was passed by Gurudas P Pilarnekar, Director & ex-officio Addl Secretary, Urban Development.
He said the Director of Municipal Administration/Urban Development is required to specify under sub-section (1) of Section 10 read with Section 9 of the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968, the seats reserved for the office of chairperson for women in the municipal councils on rotation basis.
He gave the list of municipalities wherein the post of chairpersons had been reserved for women since 1995 until this latest order.
It may be recalled that of the above four civic bodies, the election of only Valpoi Municipal Council has been held while the elections of Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem were postponed to April following Supreme Court directions.
The panel backed by local MLA Vishwajit Rane won the Valpoi civic body elections.
Meanwhile the new mayor and deputy of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) will be elected at a special meeting convened at 11am on March 30, after the corporators-elect take oath. Various standing committees will also be elected the same day.
It was not yet known who will be the new mayor and the deputy as Panjim MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate has decided to leave it to the BJP-backed 25 corporators-elect to choose among themselves. In the 30-member CCP, the BJP-backed enjoys 25 seats.
