Chandor rail roko case: Court rejects activists’ discharge application

MARGAO: The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Margao rejected the discharge application made by the activists accused in the Chandor rail agitation case, who were seeking for the charges against them to be dropped.

The accused activists, along with thousands of other citizens and political leaders, had staged a midnight protest at the Chandor Railway gate in November 2020. However, only a handful of the protestors are facing charges, in two separate cases filed by the Railway authorities and the Maina-Curtorim police.

During the legal proceedings on Wednesday, the assistant public prosecutor argued that the applications for discharge were unfounded and should be dismissed. The next hearing is scheduled on August 2.

The activists said that they will challenge the JMFC order. “We are confident of acquittal in any case because of our legal position,” said Abhijit Prabhudesai, co-convenor of Goyant Kollso Naka and one of the accused.
