MARGAO: For the second time within a week, vigilant residents of Chandor-Cavorim on Saturday stopped another illegal construction undertaken by a migrant with Sarpanch Edward D’Silva issuing a stop work order besides lodging a complaint with the panchayat.

It may be recalled that on December 29, the panchayat conducted a site inspection at Bindimoll where it was noticed that a Uttar Pradesh native had constructed two rooms without keeping the necessary set back in an agricultural land without converting it nor obtaining any licence from the panchayat.

During the site inspection, the migrant stated that in his hometown of Uttar Pradesh they construct whatever they want once they purchase land and the land is transferred in their name without taking anybody’s permission, he did the same in Goa too.

Taking advantage of the New Year and the weekend, he started cutting the steep hill at Fatranmoll, Chandor-Cavorim without taking any permission from any authority. Noticing this, angry villagers gathered at the site.

The sarpanch, who is also the ward panch, immediately complained to the panchayat, which in turn issued a stop work order and the work was stopped.

Angry locals asked the operator of the JCB which was used to cut the hills to restore the area to its original status and part of it was done.

However, what irked the villagers was that the Flying Squad which was called at 11 am arrived at 4:30 pm when the sarpanch could not be present due to his business activity and the villagers had to summon the deputy sarpanch Arlinda Tereza who arrived along with former sarpanch Celina Coelho Furtado.

“The Flying Squad should be called crawling squad if this is how they respond to complaints of illegalities or is it that they want to arrive only after the act is completed,” asked an angry local.
