MARGAO: Residents of Chandor Cavorim in one voice rejected the State Highway No 8 that is shown as passing through the village and demanded that a meeting be organized with the Town and Country Planning Minister to discuss the whole issue.
The rejection of the State Highway was voiced vociferously at a meeting called by local MLA Clafacio Dias to discuss problems of the village on Wednesday and when PWD Engineer displayed a map showing the State Highway 8 as notified in 1977.
The engineer conceded that the highway is incomplete because the road over bridge connecting Chandor and San Jose de Areal is not yet constructed and also revealed that the government has already acquired land for construction of a 20 mt wide road.
The villagers argued that since the acquired land is for only 20 mt wide road which is not the dimension of a State Highway, the notification be withdrawn and proposal to have State Highway passing through their village be dropped.
The PWD Engineer referred to the government proposal to denotify all State highways and said his department is waiting for instructions from the Town and Country Department regarding the same.
The villagers pointing out that in the Draft Regional Plan discussed at the village there was no indication of a State Highway passing through the village and since the government was thinking of denotifying State Highway a meeting be organized with the TCP minister and urged Clafacio to do that at the earliest.
