CANACONA: A newly-formed NGO has complained against a hotel after accusing it of scrupulously dumping garbage on roadside at Char-Rasta.
Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) and Canacona police have begun an inquiry against the arbitrarily dumped garbage on a roadside leading to the hotel from Char-Rasta.
Earlier, CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello and Chief Officer Sudhin Natu inspected the site, where people found garbage dumped on Monday morning.
According to NGO ‘Goenkar’ (Canacona), the senior staff of the hotel when called at the site admitted that the garbage was indeed generated in the hotel.
Accordingly, CMC was informed and Chairperson Rebello along with other councillors including ward councillor Ajay Bhagat visited the site. Some senior managerial staff of the hotel were also present when the strewn roadside garbage was inspected by the chief officer.
Following the inspection, NGO Goenkar (Canaocna) lodged a formal complaint with Canacona police.
“The same is acknowledged by the hotel represented by security manager. We would like to initiate action against the culprits under existing law (under Garbage Nuisance Act 1996,” stated the NGO member in the complaint.
When asked, CMC Chairperson Rebello said, “The council has begun an inquiry against the hotel for wayward dumping of garbage in a public place.”
Canacona police, confirming that a complaint has been received, however, threaded a cautious path saying an investigation is being conducted to find the culprits.
When told that the hotel staff reportedly acknowledged that the garbage was generated in their hotel, police source said, “The garbage looks to have been generated in the hotel; however, our primary investigation revealed that an event organizer, who organized a function in the hotel, dumped the waste/garbage by
the roadside.”
“The culprits will be booked soon and produced before the appropriate authority for action,” said the source when asked whether the accused will be arrested or fined.
