Charges framed in Velim church case

MARGAO: Judicial Magistrate First Class Saee Prabhudessai on Friday framed charges against 22 people in the infamous Velim Church Attack case and posted the same for trial on January 25.

MARGAO: Judicial Magistrate First Class Saee Prabhudessai on Friday framed charges against 22 people in the infamous Velim Church Attack case and posted the same for trial on January 25.
On February 26, 2012, police personnel who had gone to the Velim church in the evening were attacked by a crowd of over 1000 people who were called to the church by pealing the bells of the church.
Following the attack Police Inspector Kapil Nayak and two head constables Krishnanand Rane and Kuldeep Desai were injured with one of the head constables suffering from a fracture of the skull.
The State had thereafter had filed a case against 22 people and they were charged for attempt to murder and also causing grievous injury.
However, following a sustained campaign by the people of Velim, the State dropped the charge of attempt to murder.
