Chief Minister flags off nine garbage collection vehicles

PANJIM:  Nine Solid Waste Management (SWM) vehicles for garbage collection were rolled out by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant in the presence of Urban Development Minister Milind Naik.

These vehicles were procured by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) at the cost of Rs 1.25 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

These vehicles are provided for nine municipal councils all over the State for transporting garbage from town to dump yard. Those municipalities who received the benefit of the vehicles include Valpoi, Mormugao, Sanguem, Cuncolim, Sanquelim, Quepem, Pernem, Mapusa and Bicholim.

“Do not bring politics in the way of cleanliness. Keeping our cities clean should be our priority,” said Sawant after flagging off the vehicles.

Speaking further, the CM said that the Government intends to keep the State clean and green and that the State government is focusing on improving the infrastructure and technology in urban local bodies, in proper management and treatment of waste.

“The stakeholders of municipalities have an important role to play in keeping their respective areas clean. People from all municipal areas and from local bodies all over the State need to cooperate with the Government in keeping Goa clean. The Government under Swachh Bharat Mission initiates steps towards encouraging urban and local bodies by providing funds to make mission Goa clean,” Sawant added.

Chairpersons of Pernem Municipal Council (PMC), Usha Nagvekar;  Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Shubhangi Vaigankar;  Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) Raya Parsekar; Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) Sweta Naik Tari;  Quepem Municipal Council (SMC) Sucheta Shirvoikar; Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) Pundalik Falari; Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) Shaikh Shaizin; as well as the Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Officer Violet Gomes; Director of Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) Gurudas Pilernkar; State Mission Manager of GSUDA Vincy Rebello and other government officials were among those who were present on the occasion.
