MARGAO: The Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) has urgently recommended the deployment of Women Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) as Child Welfare Police Officers in critical police stations. In a letter addressed to the Goa Chief Secretary and Home Secretary, the GSCPCR seeks compliance within 30 days.
The recommendation stems from the December 7 joint review meeting of the Child Protection System at the Secretariat, Porvorim. Stakeholders highlighted the alignment of this recommendation with mandates outlined in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
Peter Borges, GSCPCR Chairperson, emphasised the urgency due to the current inadequate deployment of Women PSIs as Child Welfare Police Officers, especially in areas with frequently reported crimes against children. Identified critical police stations include Mapusa, Panaji, Panjim Women Police Station, Old Goa, Calangute, Porvorim, Margao Town, Colva, Vasco, Maina-Curtorim, Fatorda, among others.
Borges explained that the surge in reported crimes, particularly under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, underscores the need for effective investigation. Women PSIs, specially trained as Child Welfare Police Officers, are deemed essential to address these cases.
