MARGAO: Following complaints from local residents, Chinchinim village Panchayat on Tuesday conducted a site inspection of a waste handling site at Sucaldem this morning.
After the inspection, Sarpanch Antonio Sequeira said the panchayat would forward a report to the Salcete BDO as well as the District Collector for action in the matter. Saying that the panchayat has not issued any permission to the owner to set up the waste storage facility, the sarpanch maintained he had received a report from the Health Department on the issue.
Meanwhile, Benny Da Costa, who is handling the waste in his property, told the media that he will stop the waste storage facility if it causes nuisance to the neighbouring residents. “I have been doing the work of plastic and bottle collection. Let the sarpanch and the panchayat tell what they have done to address the waste problem,” he said, adding that the government should provide him a suitable site to carry out the work. In the meantime, local residents claimed that the storage facility is posing health hazard and a nuisance to the neighbourhood. “We fail to understand how the panchayat is quiet when there’s no permission to carry out the activity,” the residents asserted.
