MARGAO: In a noteworthy tribute to late Chris Perry, one of the best musicians of the yesteryears, the road behind the Holy Spirit Church up to main junction was officially named after the legendary musician on Saturday.
Noted musicians Louis Banks and Braz Gonsalves unveiled the plaque to mark the inauguration of the road in the presence of Chris Perry’s son Glenn Perry.
Banks said it was indeed a great honour and privilege for all musicians that the road was named after legendary Chris Perry and hoped the street will be filled with joy and laughter for eternity.
Recalling the days while playing for Chris Perry in a 15-piece orchestra, Gonsalves said, “Chris was unique as there has not been another musician like him, who could write music of such high standard.
Perry’s son Glenn, who is based in USA said, “Having travelled across the globe, Goa is his favourite place” and added that he would like to compose some Konkani music in the future.
He said he learnt music from his father.
Officially naming a road after Chris Perry, Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai announced that henceforth the Heritage festival will be an annual event and will be held at the square behind the Holy Spirit Church close to Chris Perry’s house.
Councillor Glenn Andrade said, “Following a formal request by Alberto Colaco and engineer Ernesto Moniz to name a road after Chris Perry, he got a resolution to that effect adopted unanimously at the MMC meeting on November 26, 2018.
“Then we started searching for an appropriate road to name after him and we found this road that had absolutely no name and thought of naming it after Chris Perry,” he said.
Vijai said they did not wish to rename any road as it would create unnecessary controversy and hence decided to name the small but significant road after the music maestro.
