Over the past few weeks the church in Goa has been making a concerted effort to discourage the faithful from using plastic and non-biodegradable material.
The church is responding to a call from Pope Francis for a change in the lifestyle by reducing waste, planting trees, segregating waste and car-pooling. Cutting down on the use of plastic and non-biodegradable material will reduce waste considerably. However it seems that people are not taking the message of the church to reduce plastic waste very seriously.
The other day when I attended a funeral I was surprised to see a large number of bouquets wrapped in plastic being placed at the grave as seen in the photograph. All this plastic will only lead to the destruction of the ecosystem.
We need to avoid buying bouquets wrapped in plastic for funerals, marriages, and other social functions as it only leads to the accumulation of plastic waste thereby causing the degradation of the environment.
