In the city of Panjim off 31st January Road near a restaurant, when you climb up the steps near The Cross you will notice few meters away a strange sight.
A sewage pipe crosses out of the backyard of the house. The sewage pipe comes down from the neighbouring house crossing over slope whose soil is eroding and rests on the compound wall as it passes out into the drainage.
The sewage pipe has a leakage covered up and can break as it has come down the slope due to soil erosion. It has already sunk down at the angle near the joint close to the leakage area, where the work is not carried out properly.
Moreover, besides this sewage pipe you can see at least two water pipes crossing and criss-crossing out over the slopes, what a thoughtless, clumsy work carried out by the Water Department.
Over last three rainy seasons, mosquitoes and flies/flea breeding over that area near the sewage pipe (where it is covered up) and the bushes around. Probably for a couple of years, the shrubs and thicken creeps not been trimmed makes it worst and help the mosquitoes to spread. This backyard has become a junkyard with all sorts of debris and garbage covered by the rotting leaves of the bushes.
An elderly couple lives in the house, facing a pathetic and hazardous situation in their backyard. They must have approached the government department since it is like this for a couple of years but must be helpless.
It is sickening to see the clumsy work carried out here by the government department using the place to cross the pipes across. For no fault of theirs, this elderly people are made to suffer.
Hope the concerned government department act to rectify the situation. At least the CCP area representative should arrange to trim up the overgrown bushes, thicken shrubs and creepers around at the earliest to control the breeding and spreading of mosquitoes.
