QUEPEM: Quepem locals has blamed the Quepem Municipal Council for neglecting the maintenance work of Quepem Municipal Garden, which is located in the centre of market surrounded by Deputy Collector’s and other important offices of Quepem Taluka.
In spite of its central location, the maintenance of this particular garden has been totally neglected by the concerned authorities. A local John Fernandes, informed that the garden which is in the centre of Quepem town was reconstructed by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) around 10 years back at the cost of around Rs 99 lakh.
The re-construction work was sub-standard, as soon after inauguration, some of the laterite stone fixed fell down. There were more dustbins installed then the trees planted which give an ugly appearance to the garden. The size of the benches installed is so small that it is inconvenient for two people to sit. Since last 10 years, due to lack of maintenance work, the same is in a dilapidated condition.
Avdhut Sukthankar complained that the high mast which is set up in Quepem market area is just a show piece as it does not provide the much needed brightness. Maintenance work on this high mast is done only prior to the festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi or Christmas. It is really sad to see that even high profile government departments are in the dark during the night in the market.
Vithobha Phaldesai showing concern over the maintenance work of the Children’s Park, mentioned that as there is no other Children’s Park in the vicinity, it is very important that the children’s park should be timely maintained, which is lacking today.
