PONDA: Ponda locals worried over the incidents of tree falling and which are posing threat to the lives of commuters especially after a mother of two innocent children lost her life when a roadside banyan tree fell on her while returning home on husband’s bike after voting in the panchayat elections, at Shiroda, recently.
After her tragic death, there is a growing demand from Pondaites to the government to take a decision to cut age-old trees. Earlier, a month ago, a youth was seriously injured when a tree fell on his moving bike at Curti. Prior to this, at various parts of Goa, deaths have occurred after tree falls on the moving vehicles.
Roadside age-old trees uprooting continue to take lives, but is the government serious to cut them?
Local Hanumant Naik said, “The government should cut the age-old roadside trees, which are on the verge of collapse, to avoid mishaps.”
Another local Umesh Naik questioned how many deaths should occur for the government to take a decision to cut dangerous age-old trees. Not all, but atleast fully-grown and rotten at the roots should be cut.
“For the help of fire personnel, unemployed youth registered with the panchayat under schemes should be engaged to cut age-old trees,” Vishant Naik said.
