The roads in the city of Panjim, Taleigao, Caranzalem and St Inez are in a pathetic condition mainly due to potholes and shoddy repair work which are a hazard for motorists although the speed limit is 40 km/h in the city.
The state of roads is such that the suspensions of 4-wheelers as well as of 2-wheelers are damaged often due to the uneven surface or very bad asphalting. Every time the repairs are done, more public money goes down the drain because the repairs are so shoddy. Our vehicles have to be repaired frequently which lead to unnecessary expenses and even worse, our health is affected!
Also, at several places, there are speed breakers near schools, churches, temples and hospitals. These speed breakers are mostly not painted in white so as to be identified. In some places, there are no signs for the speed breakers, a recipe for disaster if a bike rider loses control.
Due to high traffic density in the city and bad road conditions, motorists are forced to ride slowly except for rogue 2-wheeler maniacs who deliberately break the speed limit and thus be accident prone. But even riding slowly doesn’t help much. In particular, roads in Caranzalem are not motor-able due to improper asphalting as well as pothole-riddled surfaces. It is the duty of the PWD to keep roads in motor-able condition so as to prevent damage to lives and vehicles. Repair work is sometimes so shoddy that it becomes a death trap.
Speed breakers have either to be painted in white or they have to be removed as they are a hindrance to traffic flow. If the govt decides to be kind enough to paint the speed breakers, I would request them to also look at the zebra crossings in the city. Also, traffic cops only challan motorists mainly for not wearing helmets and not securing seat belts. Most of the time cops ignore double parking, no parking, excess limit, triple seats, no entry, etc. Traffic cops should impound the licenses of over speeding vehicles and streamline traffic flow.
