A n uncovered manhole at the exit of Margao Konkan Railway station poses a serious threat to human safety.
The footpath leading to the Konkan railway station has virtually turned into a danger zone for pedestrians, as an uncovered manhole posses an imminent danger to those walking, which is situated near the exit of the railroad terminal.
The railway station at Margao is one of the major transportation links in Goa, and people availing the railway facilities and other pedestrians are at a constant risk of fatally injuring themselves. It is also possible that eventuality may take place due to a sudden rush or due to passengers rushing in a preoccupied state of mind.
The Margao railway station is a busy juncture where about 40 trains make stops every day and brings and takes almost 25,000 passengers.
The Rawandfond junction, where many roads converge has a road leading to the railway station with a well-paved footpath on either side.
Many of the locals and rail commuters use this footpath to reach to the railway station and the presence of this uncovered manhole for the past several months is posing a serious situation to the pedestrians.
To add to the danger is the poor illumination at the spot during the dusk and at night. With people rushing to catch trains and some walking while talking on their cell phones may end up in the manhole and severely injure themselves.
Many locals have expressed concerns but nobody has ensured that something is done regarding the issue. The general feeling expressed is that due to unaccountability the authorities don’t bother to take quick action even after it is brought to their notice.
There is also no proper system in place by which the concerned officers do regular audit and identify this type of risky spots before someone lands in trouble.
In developed countries the victim or his family can sue the concerned authority for not providing required or proper services. It is high time that concerned authorities wake up and get to work before someone gets injured due to this uncovered manhole.
