If one sees all over Margao which was once a beautiful town with three beautiful gardens, Agha Khan Garden near Margao Municipal Council building, Ana Fontainhas Garden with beautiful spring near BPS Club and Old Market Garden opposite old court in the old market, all these three gardens are begging for rebeautification and maintenance. Old Market Garden has become a jungle for everyone to urinate and defecate openly, mostly during the night time.
Ana Fontainhas Garden, which was beautified by former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar during his first term by changing the spring into a beautiful fountain is in pathetic condition without the fountain flow. And the MMC Garden, which was once known as Agha Khan Garden, is deteriorating from bad to worse.
Next, if one sees the government buildings in Margao you will feel sorry. Look at the condition of old collectorate building near MMC Garden, the Portuguese time Camara building in the old market, new Mathany Saldanha Collectorate building, Hospicio Hospital añd even the newly commissioned South Goa District Hospital are all praying for maintenance. The old court in the old market is no exception. To add further a beautiful chapel opposite Bank of India is fully covered with shoes, chappals, sandals and slippers by the shopkeepers to do their business.
The conditions of both the fish markets — whole sale as well as retail market – are also bad. The old Bombay bus stand in the old market and old fish market near MMC is also in pathetic condition. A newly constructed link road from old market circle to Comba railway gate is not yet illuminated.
And thus, full town of Margao is deteriorating and crying for maintenance and rebeautification. Our Lady of Immaculate Conception feast is approaching followed by Christmas. Will anybody take the initiative to save the town of Margao from deteriorating? Only time will tell.
