Passengers using the Margao KTC bus stand say that the authorities should improve the amenities till the new bus stand takes shape. Complains are galore over poor illumination, seating arrangements, poor sanitation et al.
Says Consumer rights activist, Roland Martins: “The KTC may claim to have improved the services. But, cosmetic changes along will not suffice to overcome problems facing the Margao bus stand. We have to understand that the Margao bus stand has been functioning from a temporary shed erected 25 years ago. It has outlived its utility. We need a host of short term measures, including proper illumination, sitting arrangements, signages, drinking water facility, disposal mechanism to take care of waste generated at the bus stand et al”, he said.
Roland continued: “The government should first have a road map on what sort of facilities it would like to have in the new bus stand. You cannot have a water park at a bus stand. Such thing should be reviewed. Till such time the new plan is put in place, the government should streamline the existing facilities. The existing shed cannot take care of the passenger’s requirements.
Incidentally, the chief minister had last year hinted of relocating the Margao bus stand into the nearby land acquired by Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) for a truck terminus. The proposal, sources said, was abandoned after local farmers along with Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, opposed the plan.
