Water Resources Minister, Filipe Neri Rodrigues has called upon civic engineers to adopt innovative methods and materials for development of the state and the country.
Speaking at the two-day All India Seminar on Innovative World of Civil engineers organised by the Goa state centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) at the Ravindra bhavan here on Friday, Filipe said that innovation would save the country from technological blackmail from foreign countries. “Innovation will help the country to develop our own technology instead of copying cheap foreign technology”, he said
The minister said that innovative methods should be adopted by the civil engineers keeping in mind the ecology and environment of the region instead of adopting imported technology. He further stressed the need to create structures which are safe for the common man.
In his key note address, former Roorkee University Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Jagdish Narain called upon young engineers and professionals to pay attention to the challenges before them and strike a direction to find solutions which are climate friendly and energy efficient. “We have to face areas which need attention like environmental problem, pollution control and waste management and water. Not enough attention has been paid on pollution control and waste management”, he said.
Chairman of Civil Division Board, The Institution of Engineers(India) Eng Sisir Kumar Banerjee inaugurated a building products exhibition on the occasion and also addressed the delegates.
The exhibition has twenty stalls displaying very innovative building products. The inaugural session was followed by three technical sessions and three products presentations. The topics covered were innovations in Bridge Engineering by Dr Mahesh Tandon, civil structural Design software by Genesis AutoDesk, Seismic base isolation as structural response reduction and retrofitting tool by Dr P Savoikar and future trends in India of formwork technology by Raj Lakhani.
Er Ernesto Moniz, Convenor, Organising Committee told newsmen that the seminar will consist of 10 technical sessions spread over two days with ten papers being presented, covering various aspects of civil engineering.
