PANJIM: The two Writ Petitions (WP) challenging the renewal of 88 iron ore mining leases by the Goa government will come up for hearing before the Supreme Court on November 6.
When the matter came up before Chief Justice H L Dattu on Friday morning, he referred the matter to Justice J S Khehar. Justice Khehar had heard and issued the judgment in the 2G Spectrum case.
The two WPs filed by Goa Foundation and activist Sudip Tamankar had sought an interim stay on the operation of mining leases in the State. Some major mining firms, including Vedanta Resources, had announced commencement of operations.
The SC also adjourned the two SLP filed by Goa Foundation and one Rama Velip, challenging the August 13, 2014 judgement of the Bombay HC at Goa, that directed the State to renew some mining leases.
The petitioner has prayed for a CBI inquiry into the grant of leases, which resulted in the loss of Rs 80,000 crore to the State exchequer. The petitioner has also sought an interim stay on the operation of mining leases based on the Consent to Operate granted by the GSPCB.
