PANJIM: There will be clarity if the date of the Panjim assembly bypoll constituency will coincide with that of the other three by-polls, only on March 28 when formal notification for the polls in Goa would be issued. The other three by-polls will be held on April 23, the day of the Lok Sabha elections in Goa.
The Panjim seat has fallen vacant with demise of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the then sitting MLA from the constituency. He died on March 17.
Additional Chief Electoral Officer Narayan Sawant said that his office has already informed Election Commission of India about vacancy in Panjim assembly seat following Parrikar’s demise; and that the entire picture on Panjim by-poll would be clear on March 28.
“We are yet to get any formal communication announcing by-election in Panjim Assembly Constituency. We are not sure whether the election in the assembly constituency would be held on April 23 or delayed. Will have to wait for the notification to come,” he said. This will be the second by-election that the Panjim constituency will witness in span of two years. The constituency had gone for by-polls in August, after then MLA Siddharat Kuncolinekar resigned making way for Parrikar to contest.
