Cleaning up around funnel zone begins

Local bodies have finally woken up to the grim reality of bird strikes at Dabolim airport and commenced cleaning operations around the funnel zone of the Dabolim runway.
The activity was triggered by the bird-strike at Dabolim airport on Thursday.
Chicalim Sarpanch Raul D’Costa along with Secretary Pradeep Tamankar were monitoring the cleaning operation carried out by the contractor along the NH-17 B from Dabolim airport to Alto Dabolim on Friday.
The neighboring Sancaole panchayat also carried out cleaning operations along the highway that falls under the flying zone of the airport.
D’Costa has appealed to people residing in the area that falls under the funnel zone to refrain from dumping garbage in the open space.
“Where dustbins are required, the panchayat can make them available. From December, we will commence door-to-door garbage collection in areas that fall under the funnel zone,” said D’Costa.
Secretary Pradeep Tamankar informed that the Director of Panchayat has advised local bodies to take all measures to ensure that the area around the funnel zone is kept garbage free.
“The panchayat will impose a fine of Rs 5000 on those who throw garbage by the roadside,” he said.
Speaking to Herald, Navy PRO M C Joshi said there are nearly five places surrounding the airport where garbage is disposed off in the open.”
“These sites have attracted a large number of birds,” said told Herald.
