Goa bow out in football semis; baseball boys and girls in finals

Goa paid the penalty of playing the fifth successive match in four days, with two being played today, and lost to Jharkand 0-2 in the semi-finals of U-17 girls football at 56th National School Games at Cansaulim on Saturday.
Goa played their fourth successive match today at 8 a.m. and the fifth at 4 p.m.
Manipur beat Haryana 2-0 in the other semi-finals at Cuncolim.
The finals and third place matches will be held on November 14 at Cuncolim at 8 a.m. and 9.15 a.m. respectively.
Earlier, a brace by Jenny Silva helped Goa to qualify for the semi-finals defeating Nagaland 3-1.
Goa put it across the robust Nagaland girls with Velanie Fernandes being the other scorer in the quarter-final. Manipur hammered TN 11-0 in the other quarter-finals.
D Gracen (4), Anibala Devi (3), L Sanathoi Devi (2), M. Binodini Devi (2), M. Binarani Devi scored for Manipur in a hopelessly one-sided affair.
Jharkhand beat Tripura 2-0 in the third quarter-finals at Cuncolim with Sandley Kaikhap scoring a brace.
All the other teams also had to bear the brunt of playing matches in a cramped manner. In any case, no team can be asked to play two matches a single day in a National championship and that two crucial knock-out matches and at least after two days continuous playing, there needs to be a rest day. “It is almost killing the sport,” a football official remarked but added that since the event had to be finished in five days, the schedule had to be very tight.
Our Margao Correspondent adds: Manipur opened their account midway in the second half when Da Grace bulged the net from close range. Da Grace who was a thorn in the rival defence struck the second time to complete her brace.
Jharkhand enjoyed the lion share of exchanges and created many forays into the Goa territory. The Goa citadel feel as early as the second minute when striker Savitra Kumari slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
The early goal had a telling effect on the Goa players as they looked disjointed and hardly troubled the rival defence.
