Khorjuvekar had convened a meeting in his chamber to discuss the fire incident that occurred in Mapusa market last week, where two shops were burnt and three shops suffered minor damage. The meeting was attended by Mapusa fire station officer in-charge Bosco Ferrao, PWD engineer Fernandes, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) engineer Venkatesh Sawant, Joint Mamlatdar Mandar Naik, PSI Anikhesh Khedekar and Electricity Engineer A Rodrigues.
In the meeting, the shortcomings listed by Mapusa fire station in its letter dated September 30 and December 15, 2014, addressed to the deputy collector were also discussed.
Ferrao said when they rushed with the fire tender to extinguish the fire in Mapusa municipal market last week, they observed that the fire hydrants were covered with mud, passage to the fire hydrants was blocked due to dumping of unwanted material, electrical wires were hanging around the shops in haphazard manner, vehicles carrying goods were parked in the market, due to which they encountered difficulties in extinguishing the fire.
After hearing the views, the deputy collector directed MMC to remove the mud and obstacles near the fire hydrants and maintain a clear passage for fire-fighting operations. He also advised the electricity department to check electrical wiring in the market area and take corrective measures.
