MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Saturday announced its three-day Carnival extravaganza, wherein close circuit cameras will be installed to monitor compliance of physical distancing norms and wearing of masks at the venue.
Agnelo Fernandes, head of the Margao Carnival Committee and MMC Chief Officer, the theme of this year’s carnival is “Goenchi Lok Porompora”.
Carnival attracts major tourists to the State as it has a rich cultural history with folklore traditions and dance forms, besides a wealth of linguistic heritage with vivid idioms and proverbs.
“The erstwhile maritime trade and commerce and various lifestyles both local and cosmopolitan along with a host of other factors have enriched Goa in countless ways. The glorious tradition of our State will be showcased during this three-day event,” the CO said. He said on February 25, there will be various competitions and live band “Brothers in Arms” in attendance.
On February 26, there will be live music sessions (workshop) by Bondo for upcoming and budding musicians and live band with DJ in attendance, followed by the colourful float, flag, and dance parades and music on February 27.
“The Carnival extravaganza will end on February 27, with a parade which will include floats from various villages, towns, commercial entities and cultural troupes along with participation of dancing troupes, revellers wearing masks, costumes, live music groups, etc,” he said.
The CO said, “‘Zomnivello Khell’, a concept of yesteryears will be revived this year. More emphasis will be given on traditional categories. The added attraction this year will be Bondo, who is a world famous and rhythmic genius.”
“The Margao Carnival will try to promote ‘Goenchi Matyechi Kola’,” he said.
There will be a Screening Committee, consisting of various government officials to screen the floats so as to not violate conditions of the Elections Model Code of Conduct. On account of COVID-19 and to curb the COVID spread strict SOPs will be followed.
The CO advised senior citizens, patients with co-morbidities, children below 10 years and pregnant women to stay at home as they will not be allowed at parade venue, however they can watch the telecast on TV.
