PANJIM: Congress Legislative Party (CLP) has demanded the government to come clear on its stand on the taxi issue and the preparation of the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP).
Addressing the media after chairing the CLP meet, Opposition Leader Chandrakant Babu Kavalekar said the government has not been able to resolve any issue. “The government should come clear on the issue plaguing the State. Be it the taxi business where the tourist taxi owners are up against the government backed app or even the CZMP, they have to take a decision,” he said.
He said that the government cannot shy away from its responsibilities by pointing fingers at the previous governments. Kavalekar was referring to the Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral pointing out that the State governments in 1996 and 2011 did not take necessary steps towards formulating the CZMP.
“The government cannot run away from its responsibilities by pointing fingers at the previous governments. In the case of CZMP you had seven years if nothing was done in 2011. We had given our suggestions on the CZMP during a presentation in 2017. However, even after two years we see that the government has not done anything. No suggestions have been incorporated in the draft CZMP,” Kavalekar said.
He said the ministers played the role of the Opposition and therefore the Congress MLAs did not have to take the agency (National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management) to task for it’s lacking.
Alleging that the BJP-led governments have failed to resolve various issues some of which have been pending since 2012, he said, “If one looks back, so many issues have been pending in the State since 2012. They have been in the government but the issues keep repeating and solutions are yet to come. Neither the mining issue has been resolved nor the casino.”

Sr Rane wants govt to find solution to garbage menace
Senior Congress Legislator Pratapsingh Rane has demanded the government to come up with a solution to the garbage menace in the state. He said in light of the recent developments it is pertinent that the government finds solutions to the garbage issue. “The state is facing a major problem in the form of garbage. And plastic is the major concern as far as garbage is concerned”, he added. The former chief minister demanded that the government should look at the major international destinations like Hong Kong for solutions. “There the garbage treatment plants have incinerators that burn the garbage and generate electricity. Government should look at such plants and setup one plant in the North and one in the South instead of the burning garbage openly”, he stated.
