porvorim: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said that he will order an inquiry into the alleged fraud committed by the Mashel Mahila Co-operative Credit Society Ltd against its depositors.

Speaking to reporters at the State Assembly Complex at Porvorim, the Chief Minister said, “Depositors of Mashel Mahila Co-op Credit Society have filed a complaint alleging fraud. I will ask for a probe.”

Minister for Co-operation Subhash Shirodkar said board is equally responsible and officers have been given time till December 2024 to recover possible amount.

An inquiry panel with officers have been appointed to look into the charges of fraud in the Mashel Mahila Co-operative Credit Society.

“A panel of six-seven officers have been appointed. They will find out how much assets are there with the bank. How much advances have been given and how much is the bogus advance. However, it is the joint responsibility of the board to be alert and inform us if there is any fraud. We are always very sensitive in case of financial transactions,” he told reporters.

A large number of women, who have their deposits in the Mashel Mahila Co-operative Credit Society Ltd, organised a protest at Azad Maidan in Panjim on Thursday. They lamented that their hard-earned money was stuck with the bank that has been facing restrictions from 2020. They alleged that money to the tune of Rs 18 crore of nearly 509 depositors has been held up by the society.

Several depositors, who are senior citizens, said they have invested their life savings in the Society and are struggling to get the money back now. Besides the women protestors, there were senior male citizens too at the protest site.

They urged the State government and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to urgently intervene in the matter and facilitate withdrawal of their deposited money.
