PANJIM: Turning his back on his constituents protesting the golf course and resort in Tiracol, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Tuesday extended his government’s support to the project saying that the state needs to be an investor’s destination.
“We are supporting the golf course as the investor has taken all required permissions. Our government has been striving to bring in investment in the state and such projects are welcome,” Parsekar told media persons, on Tuesday evening. The project is coming up in Parsekar’s constituency of Mandrem.
The chief minister’s statement comes against the backdrop of an agitation by locals opposing the project. Hundreds of persons had even marched to the legislative assembly last week protesting the project and the illegal activities undertaken by the project proponent despite a stay by the National Green Tribunal.
“There is no opposition for this project. Only a few houses in that village are opposing it. Rest of the people are happy that such a project is being set up,” he said.
The chief minister said the project was cleared by the earlier Congress-led government. “Even when the project was cleared by Congress, I was supporting it,” he said.
Parsekar stated that the state has been trying to attract investment to speed up the industrial growth. “Unnecessary opposition for this project will send wrong signals amongst investors,” he stated.
Congress has also extended its opposition to the project, which is coming up at on 12 lakh square metres of land in Tiracol village.
