PANJIM: Students under the banner of the ‘Voice of Students’ held a day long dharna at Azad Maidan, Panjim, to protest the different yardsticks being adopted by different college principals especially with regards to attendance and what they termed as ‘mental harassment’.
Speaking on the occasion, President of the group Akshay Madkaikar also said that they were not being shown their answer papers despite them paying fees and called for transparency in examinations.
He said that they would draw up a list of the means used by college principals to harass them and would then hand it over to the chief minister and Goa University authorities.
“University rules mandate that students have to have 75% compulsory attendance. Then why is it that some college principals are seeking from certain students that they have 90% attendance if they want to answer the exams,” Madkaikar asked.
He also said that college principals are demanding attendance figures of those who take part in sports events as well something that was completely unnecessary and totally unwarranted.
Madkaikar said that principals were also known to target individual students, use the issue that the student was copying during the exam against the student to specifically target individual students.
He was however unable to give any specific cases or name any college principals who allegedly harass them.
The Voice of Students will now be complying with a list of grievances they gather from their member students and will file a detailed memorandum to the chief minister and the Goa University authorities.
Madkaikar also claimed that students’ movement had collapse over last 30 years and they would seek to revive it.
