Colva panchayat begins renovation of old village fish market

MARGAO:Taking forward the demand of the villagers, the Colva village panchayat has started the process of renovating the local fish market.

Colva Sarpanch Suzie Fernandes confirmed that the panchayat has started the process for the renovation. The panchayat, she added, had already forwarded the proposal for the renovation and that the gram sabha had also passed a resolution about the market.

Fernandes added that all the due processes had been done and an inspection of the market had already been carried out.

The aim of the renovation is to bring more order to the market for the benefit of all, the vendors and the customers.

It may be recalled that at the recent gram sabha, this issue had been raised wherein the panchayat was asked to renovate the fish market and provide the fish vendors a designated space to sell the fish.

At this gram sabha, the Sarpanch had informed the villagers that all the local fish vendors, who sell fish on the road side, would be asked to shift to the fish market once the renovation work was complete. There were also demands that the fish vendors maintain cleanliness of the surrounding areas.

The lack of a toilet facility for the fish vendors has also been raised by the businesses around the tinto, as the vendors, many of them elderly women, are forced to relieve themselves in the shrubbery behind the market.

The renovation of the fish market (tinto) in the village has been a  long-standing demand amongst the residents.
