MARGAO: A day after he attempted suicide at the police barracks, Colva police constable Rohan Naik has complained of harassment by Colva police station in-charge PI Uttam Raut Desai, prompting him to take the drastic step of consuming rat cake on Tuesday, even as he was discharged from Hospicio on Wednesday noon.
PI Uttam Raut Desai, however, has firmly denied any allegations of harassment, saying questioning a constable over undetected thefts and other property offences does not amount to harassment.
Sources in the know said the police constable told the magistrate late Tuesday night that he was meted out harassment by the PI. Sub-divisional Magistrate, Sangeeta Naik, despatched the report to the district police chief Shekhar Prabhudessai around noon for further action. When contacted, SP Prabhudessai said the report has been forwarded to Sub-divisional Police officer, DySP Mohan Naik, who is conducting an inquiry into the episode. DySP Naik today interrogated the staff and officials attached to the Colva police station as part of the ongoing inquiry.
It is learnt that that the police constable and PI Desai had a tiff at the police station on Tuesday morning over an oral complaint lodged by a citizen from Colva alleging that the police had raided a gambling den and had escaped with the money amounting to Rs 15,000. “When the citizen had come to the police station on Tuesday, I had called the police constable to find out the exact story. Is it harassment if you question a lower staff when the citizen threatened to lodge a written complaint over the raid and was demanding the return of the money”, PI Desai questioned.
A senior police officer maintained that the truth will come out only after SDPO DySP Naik caps his probe into the incident and submits his report to the district police chief.
