Panjim: A Committee under the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has been constituted to evaluate the proposals for establishing private universities in the State.

The Act, allowing private universities to set up their campuses in Goa, has come into effect from April 1.

The 11-members committee under the Chief Minister includes the Goa University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Satish Shetye; former VC of GU, Dr. Gopal Mugeraya; Director NIT-Goa, Prof. B. K. Mishra; Director IIT-Goa, Adv Narendra Sawaikar; Secretary Higher Education; Secretary Finance; District Magistrate; Principal Chief Engineer-PWD; and the Director of Higher Education.

Sources revealed that the government has received five to six proposals from private and deemed universities for setting up campus, including a new medical college, in the State.

The Act allows the establishment of private universities in the State to impart qualitative and industry-relevant higher education and to regulate their functions.

As per the Act, for setting up a university campus, the sponsoring body has to create a permanent endowment fund of at least Rs 5 crore and own land, buildings and infrastructure facilities required for it.

The Directorate of Higher Education has been appointed as the nodal department, to which the proposals have to be submitted to.

“The university shall be self-financed and shall not be entitled to receive any grant or other financial assistance from the government,” the Act said.
