PANJIM: Even as the Goa government has imposed a fine on the nine bike-borne MLAs for violating traffic rules last week, the Goa Congress has expressed disgust over the entire episode.
“It is in bad taste. The law makers should not break the law….Don’t create indecent scene in society,” Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Subhash Shirodkar stated when asked to comment on the traffic violation by MLAs, at a press conference Wednesday.
Five BJP legislators ~ Glenn Ticlo, Pramod Sawant, Michael Lobo, Nilesh Cabral and Carlos Almeida; three Independents ~ Labour Minister Avertano Furtado, Rohan Khaunte and Naresh Sawal, and Goa Vikas Party MLA Francisco Mickky Pacheco rode to the State Legislative Assembly complex without wearing helmet when they drove along the highway last Friday.
Ticlo, Furtado, Khaunte, Pacheco and Almeida rode the bikes without helmets while the other legislators were pillions.
Almeida was riding a bike without a number plate, while Pacheco had a number plate only at the rear side of his Harley Davidson and Khaunte’s bike had number plate which was not as per the prescribed format.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar assured the House earlier this week that legislators will be issued challans.
