PANJIM: The Opposition Congress Party on Tuesday ridiculed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for describing former minister Rajendra Arlekar as the first Goan to become the governor of a State.

Two persons from Goa had been governors in the past, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) media department chairman Amarnath Panjikar said.
“Hearty congratulations to our senior leader, former Speaker of Goa Assembly and former minister of Goa government Rajendra Arlekar ji on being appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. It’s a proud moment for all Goans as Arlekar ji is the first Goan to be appointed to this position,” Chief Minister Dr Sawant tweeted.
Panjikar claimed that this was not true.
In his tweet, Panjikar said, “:MODIfied Bhakts like @DrPramodPSawant think everything happened after 2014. Goa is proud of first Goan Governor Padmavibhushan Anthony Lancelot Dias from Assagao and second Goan Governor PVSM Sunith Francis Rodrigues. Goan Politician @rajendraarlekar is the third to be a Governor.”
National Students Union of India (NSUI), Goa unit also ridiculed the Chief Minister for his lack of knowledge and stated that NSUI arrange special tuition classes in history for Sawant.
“We request Narendra Modi ji and J P Nadda ji to relieve him as CMO Goa immediately. Two proud Goans Padma Vibhushan Anthony Lancelot Dias and PVSM Sunith Rodrigues have already become Governors,” NSUI Goa President Naushad Chowdhari tweeted.|
“CM’s general knowledge and knowledge of Goan history is pretty poor and the truth is Anthony Lancelot Dias was the Governor of West Bengal from 1971 to 1977 and General Sunith Francis Rodrigues was Governor of Punjab from 2004 to 2010,” Chowdhari said in another tweet.
BJP leader and former Goa Assembly Speaker Arlekar was appointed as governor of Himachal Pradesh earlier in the day.
Anthony Dias was governor of West Bengal from 1971 to 1977 while Sunith Rodrigues was governor of Punjab from 2004 to 2010.
