PANJIM: While the Congress party is keen on inducting BJP’s ‘badly treated’ MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh, it has so far refrained from making its intentions known officially, except saying “the party’s sympathies are with Wagh.”
Responding to a media question about various reports suggesting that Wagh may switch over to the Congress to contest the North Goa Lok Sabha seat, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Digvijay Singh said “we will cross the bridge when we reach there.”
Singh however said the party’s sympathies are with Wagh saying he has been badly treated by his very own saffron party.
“Vishnu Wagh has been treated badly by the BJP. He was assaulted and till now the police in Goa have made no arrests…there is no action against the attackers,” Singh, who is the Goa desk in-charge, told a press conference.
Meanwhile, party insiders say that Wagh would be considered for the Lok Sabha polls provided he quits BJP and applies for Congress membership, which he has not done thus far.
The AICC general secretary arrived in Goa along with AICC Secretary Chella Kumar to meet Congress leaders and office bearers in the wake of approaching Lok Sabha polls. When asked about the alleged differences between the Leader of Opposition Pratapsing Rane and Goa Pradesh Congress Committee chief John Fernandes, the senior national leader denied any differences between them, saying “both are working hard to fight the BJP.”
“As AICC General Secretary, I don’t want to tell about Congress party in public…there is no such thing (infighting) between the two. They are working to fight BJP in Goa,” he said.
Rane blamed the media for creating a controversy. “This is something to make news…it is nonsense. I am not a party to it,” was his comment to a similar question as he emerged from the closed-door meeting with national and local leaders at Dona Paula.
