PANJIM: Goa Forward Party’s (GFP) Mayem candidate Santosh Sawant on Saturday continued his door-to-door canvassing in Chorao.
He was accompanied by GFP vice president Dr Renuka da Silva and general secretary (Org) Durgadas Kamat and chairman of Goa Congress Research Cell and secretary of Manifesto Committee Avinash Tavares along with local Congress workers. They received a warm welcome in Chorao, with some residents greeting the alliance representatives with sweets in anticipation of their victory.
Tavares said, “I am confident of the alliance’s victory in Mayem. Chorao is with Santosh and we are sure to get a huge lead over all other candidates here. We are poised to form the next government in the State in March, but we will not relax till February 14. It will be a huge victory for Goa and we will put Goa back on the path to true democracy with the welfare of the people as our principal aim. The ‘dadagiri’ of the BJP will end soon and power will be back in the hands of the people.”
The inadequacy of the existing ferry service from Chorao to Ribandar, being one of the major grievances of the residents, Santosh Sawant promised them that his top priorities would include commissioning of a RO-RO (roll on-roll off) ferry service on the route to enhance the vehicle carrying capacity.
“This should take care of the difficulties faced by the people here in travelling to Panjim and elsewhere because of the long delays caused by the present frequency and size of the ferry boats which cannot cater to the rising demand,” he said.
In the evening, the campaign team was joined by GFP and Congress workers from Mayem Panchayat area, who wished to meet the candidate before launching his campaign in Mayem tomorrow. Sawant is scheduled to complete his canvassing in Chorao today before moving to Mayem.
Sawant said he was sure that the residents of Mayem are firmly behind the Congress-GFP alliance and have decided to defeat both the ruling BJP and the incumbent MLA who has shifted from the saffron party to the MGP.
