Congress seeks names of ‘outsider’ lease holders of sublet beach shacks

MAPUSA: Congress has slammed Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte’s claim that 30% of Goa’s beach shacks are being sublet to outsiders, specifically Delhiites. Demanding transparency, the party insisted on revealing the names of those operating sublet shacks and lease holders of government properties.

Congress leader Elvis Gomes expressed his concerns about the government’s leasing of properties to outsiders and urged the authorities to provide details about the number of non-Goans who have been granted long leases on government properties.Gomes highlighted that there are a total of 340 shacks in Goa, and according to Minister Khaunte, 102 of them are sublet to outsiders. In response, Gomes insisted that the names of these sublet operators should be made public, urging the Tourism Minister to take action and reveal the identities of those occupying these 30 percent of shacks.

Referring to the tenure of the late Dr. Wilfred Dsouza as Tourism Minister, Gomes commended his visionary approach in acquiring lands for the tourism sector.

Gomes also expressed concerns about the transparency of the lease granting process and accused the BJP government of harassing shack owners.
