PANJIM: A delegation of North Goa District Congress Committee on Tuesday urged the Traffic Police to take strict measures to ease movement of vehicles by reducing illegal use of no parking spaces and to come down heavily on unlicenced private vehicles used as taxis as well those found teaching driving to spouses and relatives by using rent-a-cab or rent-a-bike on public roads.
In a memorandum submitted to SP (Traffic) Bossuet Silva, the delegation said that the people of Goa have to bear the brunt of increasing instances of traffic snarls faced in various parts of the State. The recent traffic block at the Cortalim side across the Zuari River, which held motorists for hours is a pointer to what could become even worse in the days to come.
Beginning with Panjim, the delegation pointed out that the government authorities were dumping projects after projects causing traffic chaos every day. The perennial trouble spots along the D B Road where the Captain of Ports has granted permission for use of ferry ramps and jetties for use by off-shore casino operators are causing avoidable snarls every day and night too.
The traffic cell must take a call about strict enforcement of no parking along D B Road and increase the fines imposed on errant drivers who tend to break the rule of no parking with impunity. The reckless digging of roads carried out by various authorities has added to the problem, they said.
The delegation also requested the traffic police to review NOCs if any, granted to new proposals for new projects such as development of former ‘quarterdeck’ land opposite Hotel Mandovi, proposed ropeway at Campal as well as tendency to build jetties.
