PANJIM: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) along with the Vasco Police on Tuesday conducted an anti-encroachment drive at the Vasco vegetable market and confiscated fruits and vegetables.

Despite repeated warnings by the municipality, the vendors turned a deaf ear and were adamant, thus the drive against the encroachers was launched.
The drive continued for almost two hours and the municipal workers loaded confiscated goods in vehicles. These goods will not be returned to the vendors but offered to old-age homes and orphanages, informed MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues.
“The municipality had warned these vendors several times in the past and had also issued notices to them giving ultimatum of seven days to remove their encroachments. But the vendors turned deaf ears to the municipality,” he said adding that the municipality had received many complaints from citizens as it was causing hardships to them due to lack of space to walk in the market.
Rodrigues said that the municipality will now mark the areas which the vendors can use and whoever is found encroaching beyond it will be fined and their goods will be confiscated.
He further warned that such drives against encroachment will continue.
MMC Vice-Chairperson Ameya Chopdekar and Market Committee Chairman and Councillor Vinod Kinlekar stated that they were not against the vendors but the encroachment by them was causing obstructions to the people.
They said that anti-encroachment drive will now be held regularly.
