Constituency of artistes wants a cultural theatre

Rural Priol that is largely agricultural suffers from fields getting inundated and untreated water being released by industries into agricultural land

PONDA: Priol constituency is largely rural incorporating seven village panchayats – Verem-Vaghurme, Volvoi, Betki-Khandola, Querim, Veling Priol Cuncoliem, Bhoma-Adcolna and Tivrem- Orgao, with a voter total of 30,835.

A quick round of the constituency with chats with several voters brought up many issues that have been pending and need to be taken up. A major issue that has remained unresolved is that of comunidade land pending for a decade.

Gauresh Gaude, a villager from Veling complained about the failure of the authorities to build a bund. He said, “Farmers of Veling are facing ample difficulties. Lack of concrete bund forces them to built a temporary bund of wooden blocks and tree trunks every year. This temporary embankment sometimes gets carried away due to heavy flow of water, following flooding of paddy fields. The decade long demand of building a concrete bund is falling on deaf years.”

In Bhoma-Adcona Vishwajit Naik, a Panch member said, “despite  strong opposition from villagers, a green signal was given to Biomedical waste treatment plant. This project is threatening to slowly contaminate the water-bodies of the village. An untreated water from numerous other industries drained into the paddy fields is already contaminating our fertile soil”, said Naik.

Agriculture being a traditional business of our village, the water resource development is the major issue faced by villagers of Priol constituency which is yet to be put in place. Priol being an area rich in agriculture and horticulture, a lot of useful products can be derived from various fruits such as jackfruit and cocum and can be exported to different parts of the Nation. We dream to make it a reality,” said Mahesh Shilkar, Panch member, Verem – Vaghurme Village Panchayat.
