CANACONA: Although the work of Canacona’s municipal building for nearly two years, its completion before the deadline seems unlikely. The building is being constructed by GSUDA at the same place where the Portuguese-era building stood earlier. Currently the municipal office is operating out of a private space at a monthly rent of Rs 50,000.
The new building, which is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 9.12 crore, will have two storeys. D S Contractor Pvt Ltd is the construction company, which was given the contract way back on July 13, 2021 and was supposed to complete the work within 18 months. But the construction work has extended to almost two years.
“It is unfortunate that the money paid by us to the municipality as house tax and garbage tax, is being directed towards paying the rent, instead of providing the necessary services. It is the municipality’s responsibility to make sure that the construction is finished on time,” said one of the locals.
