PANJIM: Independent MLA Prasad Gaonkar’s anguish against the BJP-led coalition government he is supporting may lead to some political drama in the days to come, as the Sanguem MLAs appears to have given Congress, which is attempting to cobble up a majority to stake claim to form a new government in the State, some renewed hope.
Though, Gaonkar has maintained he has not withdrawn his support to the government, he quipped “when the time comes let us see”, when asked about switching political loyalty, a clear indication that the MLA is ready to change side, if the situation arises.
“I had supported Manohar Parrikar as the Chief Minister because I was impressed with his style of functioning. But now I find that the current government has done injustice to my people,” Gaonkar said. He was amongst the group of six MLAs, led by Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai, to unitedly meet the BJP Central Observers earlier this month.
“I am not withdrawing support from the government for now, but I have to go ahead with my Sanguem people. My future course of action will be after consulting my voters,” Gaonkar stated.
Asked whether he would extend support to Congress, Gaonkar said, “I don’t have any relation with Congress for now and no one has approached me. When the time comes let us decide what to do,” he said and added, “I am happy to serve as just an MLA without any power.”
The MLA also appeared to be unhappy with the recent cabinet reshuffle, wherein two BJP Ministers – Francis D’Souza and Pandurang Madkaikar – were dropped and Nilesh Cabral and Milind Naik sworn in. “I have nothing to say about that. We were not even aware about this, we had asked for a permanent government and I don’t think this is a permanent solution,” he said.
