MARGAO: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said that labour contractors would also be liable for the criminal activities of their labourers.
Referring to Friday’s Betalbatim incident wherein a 15-year old SSC girl student from the village was attacked with a knife by a migrant construction labourer from Hubli, Parrikar said he has asked the police to also book the contractor for abetment in connection with the attack on a school girl by a labourer. “Henceforth, contractors would also be made responsible for bringing labourers from outside the State. They cannot bring in Tom, Dick and Harry. The contractors have to do a background search before they get the labourers from outside the state”, Parrikar said, while asserting that contractors would also face the same charges.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police, South Shekar Prabhudessai has said both the victim girl and the accused are still convalescing at the hospital. The condition of the girl is stable, while the accused is kept under observation in the hospital, SP Prabhudessai added.
