Control spiralling cost of onion: MLA

MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Saturday requested the State government and the chairman of Horticulture Corporation to control the spiralling cost of onion in Goa.

Reginaldo informed that he has received several complaints from the people of Curtorim constituency and other parts of Goa on the sudden hike in onion prices from Rs 30 to Rs 100.

“In addition, the quality of onions is poor. Onion which is the most important ingredient in the Goan kitchen is now beyond the reach of the common man. Even the price of vegetables has increased. The tomato price is Rs 40 per kg, cauliflower Rs 45 per kg, ginger Rs 80 per kg and garlic Rs 180 per kg.

“Many Goans, who are already having a difficult time for the past seven months due to loss of jobs and livelihood on account of COVID-19 pandemic, are worried if the State government does not immediately act on the onion hike price, it may again touch Rs 170 per kg like last year,” Reginaldo warned.

“I request your good self to get the spiralling cost of onion and vegetables under control and make affordable onion and vegetables available through all Goa State Horticulture outlets at the earliest,” he urged.
